8 Ways to Tell if Your Business is Doing Well Financially

Blog_Article__3

One of the most common things we hear from business owners is, "I feel busy, but I'm not sure whether the business is actually doing well financially." It is a familiar situation. Sales may be coming in, work may be steady, but there is still uncertainty around cash flow, profit and overall financial performance.

We have worked with many business owners in exactly this position. Once they reviewed a few key financial numbers and put some simple systems in place, they had a much clearer picture of where the business stood and what needed attention.

Here are 8 practical ways to assess whether your business is performing well financially, along with what you can do if something needs improvement.

You are consistently profitable

Start by reviewing your monthly profit and loss report. If your business is not producing a consistent profit, it may be time to review pricing, margins and business expenses to identify where adjustments can be made.

You have enough cash to cover expenses

Check your bank balance regularly and compare it with upcoming bills, wages and other commitments. If cash flow feels tight, consider setting aside a percentage of income each time money comes in so you are better prepared for future expenses.

You are paying yourself regularly

A healthy business should allow for consistent owner drawings or wages. Rather than waiting to see what is left over, it can help to set a regular amount or percentage to pay yourself each month.

Your revenue is steady or increasing

Review your monthly sales trends to see whether income is stable, improving or becoming inconsistent. If revenue is unpredictable, you may need to strengthen your marketing, improve client retention or review your sales process.

Your expenses are under control

Look through your expenses carefully. Review each cost line by line, cancel services you no longer use and identify any areas where spending has gradually increased without delivering value.

You are not relying on debt for everyday operations

If you are regularly using credit cards or short-term borrowing to cover standard business costs, this may indicate underlying cash flow issues. A simple plan to reduce unnecessary costs or improve cash flow can help reduce reliance on debt.

Your bookkeeping is accurate and up to date

Reliable financial records are essential if you want to make informed business decisions. Make sure your accounts are reconciled each month so your bookkeeping matches your bank balances and your reports can be trusted.

You understand your financial numbers

Set aside time every month to review your financial reports. Focus on a few core numbers such as profit, expenses and cash balance. You do not need to analyse everything at once to gain useful insight.

If you are unsure where your business stands financially, that is completely normal. The aim is to build simple habits and systems that make your numbers easier to understand and manage.
