Annual Wage Review - What You Need To Know

On 19th June 2020, the Fair Work Commission (‘FWC’) handed down its annual wage review decision. The decision applies to all employees covered by modern awards, enterprise awards, as well as award free employees. 

SUMMARY OF DECISION

  • Increase of 1.75% to all awards
  • National Minimum Wage will be $753.80/week or $19.80/hour
  • Timing of increase to award depends on which group your award has been sorted into, based on the impact of the pandemic on industries.

WHEN DO CHANGES TAKE EFFECT?
  • Minimum wage in the National Employment Standards will change on 1 July, 2020
  • Group 1 (least affected) from 1 July 2020
    • Frontline health care and social assistance workers
    • Teachers and child care workers
    • Other essential services
  • Group 2 (some impact) from 1 Nov 2020
    • Construction
    • Manufacturing
    • A range of other industries
  • Group 3 (most affected) from 1 Feb 2021
    • Accommodation and food services
    • Arts and recreation services
    • Aviation
    • Retail trade
    • Tourism

The Decision also refers to significant changes to the Miscellaneous Award 2020 which will significantly reduce the number of employees on the National Minimum Wage.
